LITERALISM

Many people know how one of the books of the Old Testament begins: "In the beginning was the Word." This phrase contains much more meaning than you might think after reading it for the first time. Mankind has learned to express its thoughts using speech, but when exactly this happened has not yet been established. Globalization and the development of means of communication will increasingly lead to the formation of one universal language. But when translating from one dialect to another, misunderstandings often arise.

Literalism is a mistake when translating from another language, which consists in the fact that instead of the appropriate meaning of the word for this case, the main or most famous meaning is used. The literal translation of texts can have dire consequences. In a broader sense, literalism is a translator's error, which consists in the transfer of the formal or semantic components of a word, phrase or phrase to the detriment of meaning or information about the structure. Also often, the literal translation becomes the subject of humor, as in the old anecdote about the seminarian, who the expression "Spiritus quidem promptus est, caro autem infirma" ("the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" in Latin - Gospel of Mark, chapter 14, verse 38 ) translated as "alcohol is good, but the meat is rotten."

Different social groups often have a professional language: young people speak slang that is incomprehensible to adults, and in order to understand a foreigner's joke, one sometimes has to delve into the peculiarities of local customs and history. With the ability to learn multiple languages with the help of modern translator apps, people continue to speak not to each other, but on each other.

The play on words generates multilevel meanings of the same phrases. Another thing is images. By showing a picture to a person, you can easily explain your needs and emotions. With the increase in the rhythm of information perception, the visual language - emoji and stickers - come to the fore. Perhaps the language of the future is the language of images. But there are problems with this way of transferring information.

In different cultures, the same symbols can have completely opposite meanings. First of all, the language in which a person thinks conveys the culture that his ancestors created. That spirituality, which has been preserved for thousands of years, is undergoing changes with the appearance in everyday life of words borrowed from other languages.

Whether these changes lead to good or bad will be clear only over time, but it is already clear that this process is irreversible. And it began long before the 20th century.

The original figurative Russian language becomes simplified, similar to English.

The main task of communication becomes the definition of a positive or negative result, 1 or 0.

The variety of possible ways of describing what is happening is reduced to the most primitive options. But at the deepest levels of consciousness, the ability to understand processes indescribable in words and find echoes of the wisdom of the ancients in banal things is still preserved. This often requires a simple failure in the usual perception of surrounding things. This error or certain loop breaks the usual ribbon of reality, revealing behind it many options for interpreting the universe.

"DROWN "I""
Interactive istallation for IVth Artmossphere Bienal , Winzavod, Moscow 2023

Any team consists of individuals with their own interests, needs and desires. Individuality often does not benefit the team, since everyone first of all thinks about himself, and not about the common good. When common interests prevail over private interests, it is possible to achieve more productive results in any business. Dissolve your "I" was advised in ancient India. In modern realities, it is almost impossible to completely abandon individuality, since a person needs to think about himself and satisfy basic needs. At the same time, we can still for a while give up the "ego" in the name of the common good and drown our "I". This is what is proposed to be done in this installation.

The letter "I" is placed on the surface of the water in the center between the banks, made of a lightweight, non-sinking material (styrofoam or plastic) and attached to a ring with a load at the bottom of the river with cables that are connected into one. The cable is stretched to another load with a ring near the retaining wall of the shore, and from there it is extended to the embankment and is attached to a coil fixed on the embankment. Anyone can wind the coil and tighten the letter I under water. At the same time, the coil does not have a latch and if it is released, the letter I pops up again, the same happens with the "ego" if the concentration of the mind is weakened. The installation is based on a play on words - the author's technique, when the work technique is its language. In Russian, the word "Utopia" can be divided into two words: "Utopi" - which means drown and "Я" - which means “I”. This is a kind of call for the rejection of the "ego". No matter how much the “I” is drowned, it will surface again and again if control is weakened, because utopia is something fantastic, an unrealizable, unrealizable dream.

"FONTS GAME"
Freehand spraypaint, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk 2021

The graffiti subculture began with the writing of letters. Over time, the styles became more complicated, but the main idea remained unchanged - replicating the name of the writer or the name of the team. Many street artists started with classic graffiti, but for some, this stage was only a transitional period to more meaningful creativity. Often the first practice of playing with fonts took place at school, when a similar thought was in the minds of young creators - marking the territory with their pseudonym. Many still continue to play in the tradition of the old school. These practices are mainly held in public places, and the statements of only a small number of authors suggest interesting thoughts to the casual viewer. More often, the complex construction of letters comes to the fore, in which it is almost impossible to make out the meaning.

Perhaps those who are still playing with fonts should think that how you write is not so important, more important - what is the thought being transmitted, is it so difficult to write simply?

The work was created together with schoolchildren, as part of a graffiti master class. On the cubes it is written in Russian letters - "It's so difficult to write simply." For children who picked up a paint can for the first time, it was really not easy to write.
